Tribute to Dick Silvers

6/29/1931 – 6/25/2012

Husband, father, grampa, great-grampa, brother, uncle and friend

June 29, 2012 would have been his 81st birthday and 60th wedding anniversary

I. Comfort One Another

(Song lyrics by Steven Silvers, based on 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

  • We want you to know about our brethren who have fallen asleep in Jesus, for we don’t grieve like those who have no hope.
  • For Jesus died and rose again, and God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
    • Encourage one another with these words.
  • For by the Word of the Lord, those who have fallen asleep in Jesus will go before those who remain at the coming of the Lord.
  • For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God.
    • And the dead who believed in Christ will be the first to rise.
  • Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
  • And so shall we always be with the Lord.
    • Therefore comfort one another with these words.

II. Selected Quotes

(posted on Facebook in the first few days after Dick Silvers fell asleep in Jesus)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea” (Psalms 46:1-2). This was the best reminder I could have in light of my father-in-law passing away yesterday [6/25/2012] from a heart attack he suffered late Sat. night. He is with his Savior and we can rest in that. God will be our refuge and strength and help. We will greatly miss Grampa! –Charity Silvers, dauther-in-law

Monday afternoon [6/25/2012] this world lost a true gentleman. He was the most loving, caring, forgiving, best bear-hug giving person ever and I’m proud to have been able to call him grampa. I will always miss you and forever hold you in my heart. Sad to have to let you go but so thankful that you’re with our Savior now. I love you! -Ruth Ann Silvers, granddaughter

  • Sounds like you’ve had a great example of a godly man in your life. It’s hard to say goodbye to the ones we love while rejoicing in their homecoming. –family friend

We just lost the man, Dick Silvers, who has always had our backs here on earth! From even before I ever married Steve 32 years ago, he has been there for us helping us through thick and thin! We love him deeply and will miss him greatly and I’m so thankful to have had a father-in-love like him. He was a wonderful grampa to our kids and I’m glad that our children had such a great relationship with him. -Charity Silvers, dauther-in-law

I‘m definitely gonna miss grampa’s bear hugs and kisses on my cheek, his huge smile and loving heart. But I do know he lived a long, beautiful life and this is teaching me to cherish every living moment that I have. I am so thankful for my AWESOME family, there’s definitely a lot of love flowing around. –Hannah Silvers, granddaughter

All I want right now is one more bear-hug ♥ -Esther Manning, granddaughter

  • Me too! –Hannah Silvers, granddaughter
  • That sounds really nice. –Sarah Moore, granddaughter

He was so in love with his grandchildren. –Dottie Silvers, sister-in-law

My uncle, the most gentle Marine this world has ever known, fought a strong battle against a stinkin’ heart attack yesterday. When he and his doctors could do no more he went to be with Jesus. –Wendi Silvers, niece

This should be the definition of chivalry: Growing old with your wife, always pumped gas in the car for her, passing away, and needing her son to teach her how [to pump gas] because she’s never done it before. That’s a true gentleman. –Ruth Ann Silvers, granddaughter

This world has lost one of its finest. Thankfully, we have hope that he is now with his Savior. I couldn’t have had a more caring, generous Grampa. He kept chivalry alive and set a great example of sacrificial love. He was also strong and wise to boot. It’s just like him to go without giving anyone a chance to worry over him or burdening anyone with the struggle that his survival would’ve been. We’ll miss him deeply. –Sarah Moore, granddaughter

  • He was an honorable man and loved his family so very much. –Dottie Silvers, sister-in-law
  • I’m sorry for your loss, but thankful for the Blessed Hope of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Praise be to the Lord for His perfect plan! I know you will miss your beloved Grampa, but because of our Lord, you will see him again! –Ben Moore, Sarah’s father-in-law
  • Sarah what a beautiful tribute to your grandpa. Your dad’s dad? My greatest sympathy. –family friend
  • Yes, he is my dad’s dad. He was an only child and we were blessed to be his only (spoiled) grandchildren. –Sarah Moore

My kids’ grampa was so special! He had his favorite things to eat and our kids gave them nicknames: Esther remembered “grampa candy” [Werther’s Original Caramels]. Then Sarah mentioned “grampa bread”… a special treat when we went to visit Steve’s parents. –Charity Silvers, dauther-in-law

  • Dad will definitely have to keep that going for Cailyn and all the future grandchildren. -Esther Manning, granddaughter

Don’t know how to sum up the past couple days for me, other than the fact that God is a loving, caring, all-powerful, and sufficient God who will provide for all of our needs, especially through tough times, now and in the future. He has plans for us and all we can do is trust in Him. Prayers would be gratefully appreciated right now for my family and I! –Ruth Ann Silvers, granddaughter
