Tribute #3 to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Intelligence plus character

that is the goal of true education.

-MLK

Intelligence has to do with mental aptitude. A smart person may be intelligent, but a smart person may not have good character.

Character has to do with moral or ethical qualities of honesty, courage, integrity or the like: It takes character to take a stand for truth using non-violent means based on the principle of love and the application of the Golden Rule. (See Tribute #1 to MLK.)

What would Martin Luther King, Jr. think of today’s public education system?

  • Are public school test scores today showing that kids are more or less intelligent (on average) than kids in the early 1960’s (when MLK was alive)?

What moral and ethical qualities were taught in the early 1960’s (when MLK was alive) that are no longer being taught today? Or are there better moral or ethical qualities being taught today that were not taught when MLK was alive?

  • What would MLK think about that, being that he was a Christian preacher who had character and took a stand for truth using non-violent means based on the Christian principle of love and the application of the Golden Rule?
